Every tire has a size code on its sidewall. Here's what each part of "P225/55R17" means:
Tire Type
P = Passenger, LT = Light Truck, ST = Special Trailer. Most cars use P-metric.
Width (mm)
The width of the tire from sidewall to sidewall in millimeters. Wider tires = more grip.
Aspect Ratio
The sidewall height as a percentage of the width. Lower number = shorter sidewall, sportier feel.
Construction
R = Radial construction (99% of modern tires). B = Bias-ply (rare, specialty use only).
Rim Diameter
The diameter of the wheel the tire fits, measured in inches. Must match your wheel size exactly.
Open your driver's side door and look for a white sticker on the door frame. It lists the recommended tire size, tire pressure (PSI), and load rating for your specific vehicle.
Look at the side of your current tire. The size is molded into the rubber in a format like P225/55R17 91V. The numbers before the space are your tire size. The letter and number after are the speed and load rating.
Your vehicle's owner's manual has a section on tires that lists the recommended size, pressure, and any approved alternative sizes. This is the most reliable source if you're unsure.

Wrong tire sizes can affect braking distance, cornering grip, and hydroplaning resistance. In Miami's frequent rain, having the correct tire size is critical for safe driving. Your ABS and traction control systems are calibrated for a specific tire diameter.
Tires that are too wide or too tall increase rolling resistance, which means your engine works harder and burns more fuel. Sticking with the manufacturer's recommended size gives you the best balance of performance and efficiency.
Your speedometer is calibrated based on your tire's overall diameter. If you change to a significantly different size, your speedometer will read incorrectly. A 3% change in diameter means your speedometer could be off by 2-3 MPH.
Mismatched tire sizes cause uneven wear patterns, meaning you'll need to replace tires sooner. On AWD vehicles, even small size differences between tires can damage the differential and transfer case, leading to expensive repairs.
